It is a business after all

There are time when artists forget that the work also includes being very aware of what it means to run a business. And in this case, a personal business. Actors are responsible to be on time for rehearsal, prepared, and open and ready to be in the art of active storytelling. It is our job to bring nuance and care to the arc of the character. If you are singing, acting, and dancing in a show it is imperative that you take care of your physical body and your mental well-being. Trouble outside of the work can be included in your toolbox for emotional connection, but it should be controlled and within your grasp so that you don't lose the character within your personal psychosis.

If you are a union member, be familiar with the rules and protocols. Many of us never contact our union for assistance or to ask questions fearing repercussions or worse. And that is not a good practice because we must remember that this is a business after all. And when we are active in our union it strengthens the union and empowers each of the members.

And most importantly, never forget who you are. This business is filled with charlatans and individuals who mean you no good. Unfortunately, because of the competition it can at times bring out the worst in your fellow actors. Bitterness and lack of contentment cannot be solved when you bring it into the sacred space. In fact, it can cast a dark cloud over everything. And if you are like me, someone who is very agreeable and always willing to share with an open hand and heart, it can be disheartening when you are faced with such a challenge. This is when you must remember your core and who you truly answer to. I am accountable only to my higher power who sees all and has worked everything out before I can even wrap my mind around it.

That ladies and gentlemen is the core of being a professional actor, Connecting art to the business, to being professional, respecting the sacred space, and blending yourself seamlessly into the work. This is show business.
